The number of coronavirus-related deaths worldwide could be about two, three times higher than the roughly 3.4 million deaths confirmed so far, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

A conservative estimate suggests at least six to eight million people may have died in the pandemic so far, WHO data analysis chief Samira Asma said at a virtual press briefing.

WHO data analyst William Msemburi, speaking at the presentation of the organization’s annual statistics report, said that estimate includes both unreported Covid 19 deaths and indirect deaths due to lack of hospital capacity and movement restrictions, among other factors. The problem, he said, is that the reported deaths do not reflect the full extent.
